House Bonck

Welcome to Huis Bonck. People have lived and worked here for 400 years. Stop by to taste the special atmosphere and learn what "top shelf linen" is. Sit in the hanging room of merchant Bonck and look out over the water or try out the cozy bedstead. Children can search and color through this special house.

Huis Bonck

Like a ship
Huis Bonck has a hanging room that is literally 'hung' on the beams, hence the name. The room feels almost like a ship, with the wooden panelling all around, a low ceiling and the view of the water.

It is the only room in the house with only one clearly defined function; the office. This word is derived from the French word 'comptoir' which means money box or counter. This is probably the place where the money chest of merchant Bonck has stood.

Huis Bonck

Top-shelf linen
Beautiful linen, that is the pride of every household in the seventeenth century. Crystal clear white and tightly starched, that's how people preferred it. From the linen you could read the wealth of the house: the higher the piles of linen in the closet, the more prosperous the family. People had to save a lot for an eviction. That is why you see the linen press as a showpiece in the front house.

Out of bed, into the kitchen
In the inner room, domestic life took place. Cooking at the fireplace, eating at the table and then sleeping nice and warm in the bedstead. Have you ever stepped out of your bed into the kitchen like that?

Huis Bonck

A hustle and bustle
The front room in House Bonck is five meters high. This is not without reason. This allowed a lot of light to enter. The more light, the longer you could work. And they worked hard ...

Huis Bonck has beautiful views over the water. In history, the proximity of the water played a major role. If you look outside now you will see a peaceful marina. The view of merchant Bonck from his hanging room was very different at the time. He saw the Zuiderzee and the ships that were anchored there, on the quay it was a hustle and bustle.
